You all know the Superman story. It’s as tied into Americana and pop culture as apple pie. A spacecraft crash-lands on Earth and the alien boy within is adopted by a kindly couple. But what if the child didn’t grow up to be a superhero and savior to humankind? What if, instead, the alien turned into a menace that threatens our planet? That’s the question that the trailer to next year’s film Brightburn–written by Brian Gunn and James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy)–asks viewers.

Actors Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect) and David Denman (The Office) bring an intensity to a concept that could sink or soar depending on the caliber of performances and writing. Luckily, it appears that all involved are committing to the idea and following through to its natural conclusion–a conclusion that looks downright terrifying.

Brightburn debuts Memorial Day 2019.

From the official film description:

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?
