Domino is a character that’s been around for more than a quarter century, a hero/assassin/hired protector that is ripe with storytelling possibilities. We’re only one issue into the new Domino ongoing series helmed by writer Gail Simone, artist David Baldeon, colorist Jesus Aburtov, and letterer Clayton Cowles, but this depiction of the luck-powered mutant will undoubtedly go down as one of the most well-rounded and dynamic, and here’s why: While Domino is a highly competent, cunning, sassy, funny, sharp badass, sometimes her power makes it difficult to know how to root for her. How does it work? What are its limitations? Are there any stakes in a character whose luck seems to always work out?

The entire creative team has seemed to figure out how to make those questions narratively engaging, as we see in our exclusive preview of this week’s issue #2, as she deals with the fallout, both figurative and literal, of her encounter with the mysterious Topaz.
