While the theme song to the 1980s cartoon Jem and the Holograms is one of those classics that instantly earworms its way into your brain, it could probably use an update for the new century. The folks at Hasbro and IDW Comics must have thought the same thing, as they’ve just released a new theme and a music video to give Jem and her fellow rockers their proper due.

Although a new theme for Jem has been a long time coming, the song/video combo also helps to kick off IDW’s big “Infinite” crossover event, launching this week with Jem and the Holograms: Infinite #1. In “Infinite,” crisscrossing between the aforementioned Jem title and Jem and the Holograms: The Misfits: Infinite, the six-part series explores an alternate world in which Jem and her cohorts rule using the very Synergy hologram tech that allows Jerrica Benton to become the pink-haired rocker Jem. Our Jem and company are co-opted to liberate the alternate world, with the Misfits pulled into the mix as well.

Writer Kelly Thompson, who’s helming both books, did extraordinarily well by Jem’s world in the recently wrapped 26-issue run of Jem and the Holograms and it’ll be fun to see what she’ll do with taking the sci-fi element that has always been under the surface of the Jem yarns. Joining her is artist Jen Hickman on the Jem side of the “Infinite” story, with Jenn St-Onge handling art chores over on The Misfits.

Jem and the Holograms: Infinite #1 hits comic shops this Wednesday, June 28th, from IDW.

And if the new video has you waxing nostalgic for the Jem theme of old, stroll down memory lane with this one, too!
