In case you forgot or we haven’t covered it enough here, Marvel Studios has a little film called Captain America: Civil War hitting theaters on May 6th. To capitalize on the excitement of that movie, it’s little surprise that Marvel Comics would launch its own miniseries event to coincide with Cap 3‘s release in the form of Civil War II. Which isn’t really sequel to the first Civil War mini way back in 2007. Or related even tangentially to the Cap 3 film. But hey, they both share the words “civil” and “war” in the title, so that’s something.

Nevertheless, Civil War II #1 hits comic book shops on June 1st to kick off the event. Sorta. Before that date, readers will have already had a taste of the story in the Free Comic Book Day special and Civil War #0, both released in May. Those types of issues always tend to be filled with background information that, strictly speaking, isn’t totally necessary to understanding what goes on from issue 1 onward. In theory. So, you should probably be okay starting with issue 1. Probably.

In case you don’t have the opportunity to read either of those issues prior to the kickoff in June, here’s what we do know: An Inhuman is found with the ability to predict the future. The superhero types split into two factions: those who want to use the Inhuman’s power and those who think it’s a poor decision. Captain Marvel leads the folks who want to make use of the ability; Iron Man leads the crew who thinks we should leave well enough alone. The choices for those who fall on which side seem a little skewed to me; for instance, I don’t see Steve Rogers siding with the crew wanting to use knowledge of future events, lest that power corrupts.

Regardless, we’ll learn more about the ins and outs of Civil War II soon enough. In the meantime, check out these preview pages to sate your appetite for not-so-civil warfare.
