The Lego Movie was a wild success among kids and adults because it refused to talk down to the audience. Sure, it was brimming with fun and the sillies, as director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, took viewers on tour through the Lego universe by way of actor Chris Pratt’s Emmet, Elizabeth Banks’ Lucy, and Will Arnett’s Batman, but it knew when to connect the sweet with the slightly sarcastic and subversive. And if the new trailer for next year’s The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, directed by Mike Mitchell, is any indication, we’ll get much more of the same, with some surprises stuffed in for good measure.

With Lucy kidnapped by aliens and taken to deep space, Emmet must team up with Rex Dangervest, also voiced by Pratt, who is a pastiche of the actor’s characters in Guardians of the Galaxy, The Magnificent Seven, and Jurassic World. And with Batman back for this second go-around, expect much bloviating and muscle flexing as the egos hilariously fill the screens.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part debuts in February 2019.
