Well, I just read Marvel Comics Venom War: It’s Jeff #1, a “Venom War” tie-in, and that was freaking adorable. And what else would it be? It’s Jeff! Being buddies with a Venom symbiote! With arms! Kicking butt and eating everything on Coney Island!
I didn’t actually realize this one-shot was coming out and happened to see it at my comic shop. With Kelly Thompson? Art by Gurihiru? The team behind the Infinity Comic? And our favorite land shark Jeff? I had to. I have nearly every comic with a Jeff appearance because he always makes me smile. It’s been a rough few days and a new It’s Jeff! installment cheered me right up. Bam! Instant smiles.
In case the so-cute-I-can’t-stand-it art or title didn’t clue you in, this is a Venom War tie-in, beginning with Jeff about to miss a pickup with friends Kate Bishop/Hawkeye and Gwenpool from fellow hero America because of outfit paralysis. What to wear?! After Kate deems Jeff’s ducky outfit inappropriate (which, boo, Kate, boo), he panics, resulting in not being able to decide on a substitute in time AND missing his ride with America.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) for our cutie, he encounters a symbiote hiding in his closet and attaching to the land shark. While initially unwelcomed by Jeff, the two strike up a mutually understanding, the bond mentally and physically over their shared love of food. The pair make their way to Coney Island and begin devouring everything in sight. Luckily, Kate and company show up, but can they ring sense into Jeff and stop some symbiote-possessed humans from running amok? The outcome, as always, is full of the “awwwws” and the hilarity.

As with every It’s Jeff! Installment, the writing is sharp and light, making it one of the only truly-all ages comics on the shelves. And Gurihiru’s art is always ebullient, kinetic, and bubbly. The Venom War storyline, while fun, is also a heavy affair and this is a nice break in that heaviness. Having a bad day? Need a break from the seriousness of, well *gestures everywhere*? The upcoming holiday stressing you out? Just want a smile? Then you know the answer:
