DC Comics‘ Batman and Image Comics‘ Spawn are two of their respective companies’ most recognizable and iconic characters, so much so that they are some of the first characters that spring to mind when you think of DC or Image. Now the two will reunite in the four-colored pages of comics for the first time in 28 years in this December’s Batman/Spawn one-shot, written by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and drawn by long-time artist for both Batman and Spawn Greg Capullo!

The news, which was first teased at the San Diego Comic-Con in July of this year, was dropped today by DC via press release, revealing that the one-shot will focus on Batman foes the Court of Owls will attempt to use Spawn to beat the Dark Knight Detective.

As for the why of the book, McFarlane says, “Look, this is really simple. I get to play with one of the greatest comic characters ever (Batman), get to reunite with amazing artist Greg Capullo, AND am able to mix in my own creation (Spawn) into the storyline.”

Capullo shares McFarlane’s sentiments, adding, “I was fortunate enough to be able to draw both Spawn and Batman each for over a decade. Now I get to use those decades of experience to bring fans the event they’ve waited nearly 20 years to see happen. Spawn and Batman together again. It’s gonna be fire.”

And in November, ahead of the big comic event, DC is dropping more Batman/Spawn goodness, Batman/Spawn: The Complete Collection, collecting the first two crossovers, Frank Miller and McFarlane’s Spawn/Batman and Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, and Klaus Janson‘s Batman/Spawn: War Devil.
