While director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice gave audiences the mopey, destructive Superman no one was asking for (or maybe they were–it’s not like Warner Bros. lost money), with the bevy of films based on DC Comics properties in development, it looked as though a Man of Steel sequel wasn’t in the cards, with only a general declaration that the studio’s slate allowed for a possible Superman solo film. It looked as though that Krypton’s last son was resigned to be all sour-patch in his casket after his death in BvS until the Justice League summoned him to bring his unique brand of sunshine back to the world.

However, it seems bringing Superman back to the fore and giving him a much-needed attitude adjustment is at the top of Warner Bros.’ to-do list. According to The Wrap, a Man of Steel 2 film is in “active development,” with getting Superman right a “top priority.” That in itself is somewhat heartening, as moves have been made recently to right the ship of Warner Bros.’ DC movie woes by bringing in DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns as co-chief of the newly-formed DC Films. Johns knows DC’s characters inside and out, having once written characters such as Superman, Aquaman, and Green Lantern for their various solo comic book series. If anyone can lighten the mood of the DC movie universe, it’s Johns.

What form that will take, however, is too early to call. Will Superman be more responsible in his propensity to level major metropolitan areas? Will he gain the trust of a populace that once feared him? Will he stop punching first, only waiting to ask questions later? The name of the game is “wait and see.”

Man of Steel 2 will hit theaters TBD.
