Author Luke Y. Thompson

Luke Y. Thompson

Luke Y. Thompson has been a writer and editor in the fields of cinema, pop culture, fast food, weird food, and toys since 1999. He was the first trade reporter to offer thorough daily coverage of Comic-Con at Deadline under Nikki Finke, and has worked on a few super-obscure direct-to-video cult movies, which is how he met his wife. In 2013, he took over Voice Media's Topless Robot "nerd" site, running until its closure in 2015. Writing and editing for the email blast GeekChicDaily, he helped build the company to a level where it was able to purchase Nerdist and sell to Legendary Entertainment. Previous outlets include New Times, LA Weekly, E! Online, The L.A. Times, Deadline, Wizard Magazine, and more. A member of the LA Film Critics Association, he has won L.A. Press Club awards for headlines at New Times LA, and movie reviews for OC Weekly.

Blu-ray Review: Ambulance’s Confinement Plays Well Under Quarantine

Luke Y. Thompson
Jun 15, 2022
Movies, Reviews
Across four decades, Michael Bay hasn't really changed. But it's remarkable how much the attitude toward him has. When he started out as a filmmaker in the Tony Scott mold under Jerry Bruckheimer's umbrella,...

4K Review: The King’s Man Gets Less Flippant, Stays a Tonal Mess

Luke Y. Thompson
Feb 23, 2022
Movies, Reviews
The standard formula in every live-action adaptation of a Mark Millar comic (Wanted, Kingsman, Kick-Ass) is thus: reasonably ordinary person discovers he's surprisingly good at a thing, but not quite good...

4K Review: 20 Years of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Luke Y. Thompson
Nov 18, 2021
Anime, Movies, Reviews
Though I'm pretty sure it made my personal ten best list in 2001, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was a near-insane gamble for a major studio film. The hook was that it was a movie making the first serious...

The 10 Best Tidbits From the Godzilla vs Kong Blu-ray Commentary

Luke Y. Thompson
Jun 16, 2021
Movies
Godzilla vs. Kong finally bows on Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD this week, though if you have HBO Max, odds are you've watched it a time or two at home already. The 4K adds a more muted color filter to the...

Knott’s Berry Farm Belatedly Celebrates 100 Years With New Ride and Food

America's oldest theme park actually turned 100 years old last year, but with every theme park forcibly closed, the planned big birthday party couldn't happen as intended. This week, however, it reopened...

Saw on 4K Review: Grimier, Less Colorful…In a Good Way?

Luke Y. Thompson
May 20, 2021
Reviews
It's a minor miracle that a small, independent horror film that's basically a rip-off of Seven (I absolutely refuse to write it with the number 7 in the middle of the word, sorry) combined with the climax...

Review: Spiral, From the Book of Saw, Tries to Cut a New Path

Luke Y. Thompson
May 14, 2021
Movies, Reviews
John "Jigsaw Killer" Kramer (Tobin Bell) died in Saw III, but it took five more movies to permanently bury him, narratively speaking. At a certain point, a story is going to run out of feasible flashbacks...

Blu-ray Review: Fun ‘Freaky’ Is Finally an Affordable Friday for One

Luke Y. Thompson
Feb 9, 2021
Reviews
It probably goes without saying, but let's reiterate for those who have (reasonable) trouble keeping up with movies in a non-theatrical environment: Freaky, out now on Blu-ray and digital, very much wants...

Toy Review: Scooby-Doo Adventure in the Mystery Mansion Playset

Luke Y. Thompson
Oct 30, 2020
Lifestyle, Toys, TV
Playsets are a rare thing for toy lines in this day and age, as they cost a lot to create, and take up shelf space that most retailers would rather stock with smaller items that sell faster. But to their...

4K Blu-ray Review: David Ayer’s The Tax Collector Feels Fun but Unfinished

Luke Y. Thompson
Oct 9, 2020

RLJE Films Full disclosure right off the bat: I am generally a fan of David Ayer. I'm wearing a Suicide Squad T-shirt as I type this. And odds are you like him more than you think -- did you remember that...
