The Masters of the Universe character Andra has a history that spans four decades, stretching back to her first appearance in the Star Comics’ MOTU comic series in the late 1980s. A friend to Teela, the Eternos’ Captain of the Royal Guard, she eventually joins Teela and her soldiers as a lieutenant. However, the Eternian hero has really had the chance to shine in the past few years thanks in large part to the Netflix revival of the franchise in the animated Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution series from showrunner Kevin Smith.
Andra’s rise to a fan-favorite character in the series is due to the voice acting of Tiffany Smith (Guardians of the Galaxy; Vice), who breathes a vitality and life into Andra’s personality in the Revelation and Revolution series. And this September, fans are going to get an opportunity to learn more about the heroic warrior in Dark Horse Comics and Mattel’s Masters of the Universe: Andra one-shot, written by Smith herself! Tiffany Smith is joined by artist Adriana Melo and letters from AndWorld Design to tell a tale set between seasons one and two of the Netflix series, a story that sees Andra adapting to being the new Man-at-Arms and a leader within the Eternian guard.
I spoke with Tiffany Smith recently about who Andra is, where we find the new Man-at-Arms in the one-shot, her personal connection with the character, and how voicing Andra on the Masters of the Universe Netflix series helped informed her work in writing this new story.
It was a real treat to interview Tiffany Smith for this article. It’s rare that we have the chance to speak to someone who has portrayed the character for whom they are writing a story. Smith has voiced Andra for quite some time and it’s clear how much the hero means to her, and that passion and enthusiasm shone through when she discussed writing the one-shot. That passion is sure to translate to the finished comic.

FreakSugar: For folks who might not be familiar with the character, who is Andra?
TS: Andra was first introduced in the Masters of the Universe comics as a lieutenant. Then in the Netflix animated series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution, Andra is re-introduced as a close friend and bounty hunter with Teela. Throughout the series, we really get to know Andra – she’s a smart, talented tech engineer with a good heart. She loves her chosen friends and family and is a total go-getter. King Randor would definitely say she’s a good hire 😉
FS: Where do we find Andra at the beginning of the one-shot?
TS: The comic takes place between season one and two of the animated series. At the end of season one, Andra’s just become Man-at-Arms, and found her place within Eternia with her new friends and family. So, we start the comic with Andra trying to figure out how to be this leader that everyone else already thinks she is.
FS: You’re the voice of Andra in the Revelation and Revolution series. How does that experience translate to crafting the one-shot? I imagine it gives you a ton of insight in who the character is and her inner life.
TS: Getting to voice this character for two seasons on the animated series definitely helped me to feel super confident in my ability to write her story for the comic book. I remember going in for a recording session early on and showrunner Kevin Smith was there and he basically said, “She’s just you, Tiffany, but amplified.” It really gave me a sense of comfort and ease. I felt like I slipped into the character, knowing that I’m a huge fan of the Masters of the Universe and so is Andra, so there was an instant connection. She is the audience’s entryway into this world, and I think a bit of her is already in mine, having these animated episodes with incredible writers helped a ton when it came to writing the comic, and I definitely checked in with them throughout the process of writing just to get some encouragement along the way!

FS: Following up on that, with your experience writing Andra and voicing the character, what does she mean to you?
TS: Andra means so much to me. I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, loved Masters of the Universe, and took my action figures with me to school. So, getting to voice a character and really bring her to life in a universe that I love was so special. Doing it alongside so many of my friends made it even more special.
Then on top of all of that, as a lifelong fan of anything related to genre, I always dreamed of having an action figure of a character that you play. Now there’s an Andra figure on my bookshelf. It still feels surreal and is such a pinch me moment.
It means so much to me to get to bring a strong woman and a woman of color into this world. Seeing characters that look more like me in shows that I loved growing and now getting to voice one, has been such a meaningful experience. When I meet fans at conventions, especially women and little girls, who are excited to see themselves in Andra, that’s the most rewarding part. I’m hoping that people feel that same connection when they read the comics too!
FS: What’s next for Andra?
TS: I would love to see some more of Teela and Andra’s adventures bounty hunting. And I guess I will say, the end of season two of the series left Andra in a position where it looked like she would be possibly doing something in politics, I would love to see where that goes! I am just happy that I get to be a part of Andra’s story wherever it goes!
