With Halloween just around the corner, lovers of the ghoulish and supernatural adore exploring the spooky and the haunting across all corners of media, and comic books are no exception. With their connection to the extraordinary and the fantastical, comics are perfect outlets to tell tales during this most creepy time of year.

That’s why it’s more than natural to see Marvel Comics get in on the act and throw their heroes and villains into spirit of Halloween with this month’s Avengers Halloween Special #1, hitting newsstands October 31st! Containing an array of stories from a whole host of talented folks across the comic industry and other media, the Avengers Halloween Special will help you and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes feel the whimsy and weird that Samhain brings each October.

One writer bringing his own Halloween story to the special is Rob Fee, who has worked on a wide range of TV series and has brought his experience to the world of Marvel. Partnering with penciller and inker Eoin Marron and colorist Mike Spicer, Fee’s yarn focuses on Daredevil—the Man without Fear himself—whose history and imagery scream Halloween.

We spoke with Mr. Fee recently about his involvement with the Avengers Halloween Special, his contribution the compilation, and his pitch for the wildest Spider-Man story you’ve ever heard.

AVENGERS HALLOWEEN SPECIAL #1 cover

FreakSugar: A Halloween special involving the Avengers seems like it would be a fun project to contribute to. How did you become involved with the Avengers Halloween Special?

Rob Fee: Oh it was SUCH a fun project! My beautiful pal Gerry Duggan, who masterfully wrote Deadpool and Uncanny Avengers, had mentioned me to the editor and they liked my pitches, so we got it goin’!

FS: Daredevil is on the center stage in your tale. What can you tell us about your contribution to the compilation?

RF: It was really fun! I wrote a really jacked up Daredevil story that I assumed would be WAY too much and they’d make me cut it back, but I got notes back and they were like, “SOUNDS FUN!”

FS: Besides the religiosity tied to Daredevil’s name and outfit, what was appealing about crafting a Halloween story involving Matt Murdock?

RF: Matt is one of those guys that you like, but low-key you’d love to see him get smacked around a little bit. Is that mean? Am I the only one that wanted to smack him around?

FS: With this being an Avengers special, I have to ask: What is your favorite Avengers story?

RF: Can I tell you about a really fun pitch I had on this project about Spider-Man instead? Ok yeah, let’s do that! So I wanted to have Spider-Man going about his business when, all of a sudden he sees Uncle Ben and he’s alive! OMG! Then he sees Uncle Ben get murdered all over again. As he rushes over, he looks around and everyone starts turning into Uncle Ben. It’s like on Being John Malkovich when he goes into his own head portal. He starts descending into madness, when we step out and see that Spider-Man has actually been defeated by the Green Goblin months before and he’s being kept in a chemically-induced coma on display in Green Goblin’s lair with heroic scenarios playing out in Peter’s head to keep him mentally occupied. The glitch happened because Norman plugged a blender into the wrong outlet and caused it to glitch.

FS: You’ve worked in other writing, in TV, and in social media prior to working on this compilation. How has your past work impacted how you approached your contribution to this special?

RF: I try to make things as scary as possible, but also keep the fun in there because, it could be the most horrific imagery, but if you don’t have an emotional connection to the characters then you’re just watching a bunch of Final Destination-style murder scenes.

FS: Now that you’ve worked with this comic, has it given you a craving to do more work in comics?

RF: To quote the late Paul Bearer, “Oooooooh yes.”

The Avengers Halloween Special #1 goes on sale Wednesday, October 31st, appropriately enough, from Marvel Comics.
