USA Today posted a collection of stills from July’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. And if the prospect of armed apes on horses doesn’t get your (cinematic) motor going, then I don’t think we can be friends.

The sequel, which takes place after a plague has wiped out much of the human population, sees Caesar and his ape army waging war on the survivors.

My one concern is that the deep well of heart from Rise of the Planet of the Apes might be lost as Dawn builds its war story – and from the sounds of it, this is a war story. The gentle Caesar who just wanted love is clearly gone, but Rise had at least hints of optimism to it. I hope some of that remains.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens on July 11th, 2014.
