Last December, Dynamite Entertainment released the Gargoyles Winter Special 2024, following the loveable dog-like Bronx as he attempted to reunite a family and a missing member stuck in the snowy wonderland of New York City. And now our hearts are flying high on leather wings as fans are getting another solstice gift in the form of the Gargoyles Winter Special 2025!
From the creative team of last year’s special—Gargoyles co-creator Greg Weisman and Dynamite Entertainment editor Nate Cosby and illustrated by long-time Gargoyles artist George Kambadais—the Gargoyles Winter Special 2025 follow the heroic gargoyle Broadway as he, Bronx, and their bull terrier friend Lance as they attempt to crack an unsolved case detective Elisa Maza encountered as a first-year sleuth. Maybe the trio’s success will be the perfect way to pull Elisa from the holiday blues!
I spoke with Greg Weisman and Nate Cosby recently about this year’s Gargoyles Winter Special, Detective Broadway being on the case in the comic, the collaboration between the two and the rest of the creative team, and the inspiration behind Lance, one of the cutest puppies to ever puppy.
I was an enormous fan of last year’s Gargoyles Winter Special; it was a breath of fresh air and so much fun to dive into for the holiday season. I was thrilled to be able to speak with Mr. Weisman and Mr. Cosby about 2025’s special, but even more happy that a new special is coming, period. Bronx, Broadway, and Lance are such a joyful combo, a perfect gift for anyone who needs a winter pick-me-up and warmth as soothing a cup of cocoa.

FreakSugar: This is your second Gargoyles Winter Special, the first hitting last year. What was the genesis of this new installment?
Greg Weisman: Um… we had fun on the first one and wanted to go again!
Nate Cosby: When we did the first Winter Special, it was truly designed as a one-and-done. But earlier this year, I just got this itch in the back of my head, and this mystery-based story emerged, featuring a lot of the same players from last year’s story.
FS: Where do we find our heroes at the beginning of this special?
GW: In Manhattan, in the snow.
NC: Yeah, every Gargoyles story I write is gonna be based in New York City. The gritty city vibe is indelibly linked with my perception of what makes the Gargoyles cartoon so great.
FS: I love that we get to see the return of Detective Broadway! Besides helping his friends and family and others in need, why does this type of sleuthing work appeal to him?
GW: It’s an aspiration of his to be a detective. And it’s something he’s good at!
NC: When I brought the idea of a winter mystery, it was Greg that suggested Broadway as a central character. So, I went back and watched “The Silver Falcon,” the classic episode that introduces us to Broadway’s love of crime and detective shows. The story we’re telling here is very much an extension of and a love letter to “The Silver Falcon.” I’d encourage anybody reading this book to rewatch that episode beforehand (but you don’t have to!).

FS: Lance debuted last year in the 2024 Winter Special. What’s it like to be able to continue Lance’s story?
GW: Nate can never get enough Lance.
NC: Lance is a real pup in my Brooklyn neighborhood. Lance just has this attitude, this way of walking and looking at people…he looks like he’s trying to figure stuff out. And to be very honest…the entire catalyst of this being a mystery story actually started when I saw Lance walking around in an argyle coat, and I just thought, “Detective Lance!”
FS: This is the second installment by you two and George Kambadais. It seems like you three had a lot of fun on the last special and this one.
GW: We did. And we are.
NC: George can draw anything. There was never a thought of anyone else on this. We’re just so lucky that he was able to make the time, amidst all of this other projects!
FS: Which of the clan do you think would the most fun to celebrate the holidays with?
GW: I’m game to include the entire Clan.
NC: I mean, Bronx, obviously. Hudson would be a great hang too, just watching old Christmas movies and eating popcorn. Don’t tell Greg, but if we do another one of these, I want to do a story that forces crotchety ol’ Hudson out of his chair, and out on the street for a grand snowy adventure.
FS: Do you have any favorite holiday films or specials that you watch year after year? Or holiday-themed comics?
GW: The Bishop’s Wife with Cary Grant is one of my favorites.
NC: Christmas In Connecticut, White Christmas, Love Actually, You’ve Got Mail, The Shop Around the Corner, Meet Me In St. Louis, Little Women, and of course, Batman Returns… which is a Christmas movie that came out in June, on my birthday.
As for comics, I have an incredibly well-thumbed copy of Christmas with The Super-Heroes from DC, which my grandmother got me when I was tiny. It stayed on my desk, the entire time that I wrote this recent Gargoyles script.
FS: What are you two reading right now?
GW: I’m reading Flash comics by my buddy Jeremy Adams and murder mysteries by Michael Connelly.
NC: Bird By Bird by Anne Lamott, 31 Songs by Nick Hornby, and This Way Up: When Maps Go Wrong (And Why It Matters) by Mark Cooper-Jones and Jay Foreman.
FS: Do you have any other projects coming down the pike that you’d like to discuss?
GW: Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck! (Or is it Darkwing Duck/Gargoyles?)
NC: It’s Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck! That’s the one Greg is writing with Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones, with art by Ciro Cangialosi, letters by Jeff Eckleberry, and packaged/edited by me. It is SO MUCH FUN.
FS: What is your final pitch for the Winter Special?
GW: Pre-order. You don’t want to be left out in the cold!
NC: Fans of Gargoyles and New York City and classic mystery tales and the snow holiday season should check this out. It’s super-fun and super-sweet and goes down easy like eggnog and gingerbread cookies.
The Gargoyles Winter Special 2025 goes on sale Wednesday, December 24, 2025 from Dynamite Entertainment.
From the official issue description:
GHOSTS OF WINTERS PAST!
For Elisa Maza, December is bittersweet. She loves the snowy streets of New York City and the bustle of the holiday season – and having a Gargoyle boyfriend who carries her above the skyscrapers to see all of the festive lights is a pretty great perk.
But the month also reminds her of an unsolved mystery from her first year as a detective – a baffling break-in that featured odd clues, a stolen family heirloom, and vague descriptions of a lumbering “thing” that was seen only in the shadows. As she tells Goliath one icy winter night, the fact that she was never able to crack the case still gnaws at her, even after all these years.
And that’s all that Broadway needs to overhear to convince him to don his private eye trench coat and reopen the investigation – accompanied, of course, by Bronx and his bull terrier pal, Lance!Co-written by Gargoyles creator GREG WEISMAN and NATE COSBY, and illustrated by GEORGE KAMBADAIS, this 40-page one-shot uncovers a chilly new chapter in the saga of the Stone Guardians – frosted with crystalline covers from KAMBADAIS, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, ROGER LANGRIDGE, and ALESSANDRO RANALDI!
