Blossom. Bubbles. Buttercup. Made of “sugar, spice, and everything nice” as well as a dose of Chemical X by Professor Utonium, The Powerpuff Girls have been dazzling fans with their adventures since their debut on Cartoon Network 28 years ago. From blazing a trail through TV, film, toys, and comics, the trio’s battles with everyone from Mojo Jojo to Him to Princess Morbucks in the city of Townsville have captivated a wide audience as the years have gone on.
And that Powerpuff fever isn’t stopping anytime soon, with the heroes experiencing a renaissance recently in their own Dynamite Comics series, featuring a wide array of comic titans, including writer and artist Paulina Ganucheau, who recently completed a three-issue writing stint on The Powerpuff Girls series. I spoke with Paulina Ganucheau recently about her history with the maids of might, her favorite part of working on the book, creating a brand-new PPG character, and which of the heroic trio she gravitates most to.
Paulina Ganucheau is one of those creators who has a keen handle on the Powerpuff Girls and their world, so much so that you feel like you’re watching an episode of the cartoon. It’s that seamless, but also giving fans a wholly unique experience that only Ganucheau and comics can provide.
Editor’s note: This interview was conducted last year. Due to technical issues, we had trouble getting the interview to post. Now that has been resolved, we are publishing the interview in full, with minor changes to reflect the time that has past between now and the interview.
FreakSugar: Before we get into issue #4, what is your personal history with the Powerpuff Girls?
Paulina Ganucheau: Oh gosh, I’ve been a fan since it first aired in 1998. I was 10 and it meant everything to me. My sister and I were part of fanart message boards and made up our own original characters. Safe to say it’s always been something I’ve been very attached to.
FS: How did you become involved with the Powerpuff Girls series?
PG: My killer editor Nate Cosby pulled me in! I couldn’t be more grateful for it either. It’s been a blast. (Thank you, Nate!)
FS: Where do we find the superheroes at the beginning of issue #4?
PG: Issue #4 finds our girls at a charity bake sale competition. Bubbles is obsessing over a bunny shaped cupcake. Blossom and Buttercup start fighting over what’s considered a “cool” cake. You know, the usual.
FS: Can you talk about who we might see the three encountering in your three-issue run?
PG: Lots of old friends and some new friends too! I think there’s a little bit of something for everyone. 🙂 But you’ll definitely see Mojo Jojo. Because you can’t have PPG without Mojo.
FS: It might be like picking your favorite kid, but do you have a favorite of the trio?
PG: This question always gets me! I think the answer is Blossom, but I really have affection for Buttercup too. I think I love the duality and opposition of both of them together the most.
FS: What has been your favorite part of working on the book so far?
PG: Honestly, tapping into those parts of my brain that have loved the show for decades has been a treat. It also sometimes feels like I’m writing this for younger me and I think she would have really liked these issues.
FS: What are you reading right now?
PG: Flavor Girls, Delicious in the Dungeon, and Oh My Goddess!, a classic!
FS: Do you have any other projects you’re working on that you would like to discuss?
PG: Yes! I have a creator owned graphic novel from First Second I wrote, and am now illustrating, called Flora that will come out in the next few years. It’s a story that I’ve put my whole heart into and I can’t wait for the world to see it.
FS: Can you tease what else you have planned for this three-issue run?
PG: A wild cake battle, Dynamo returns, and I got to design a brand-NEW character in issue #6!
FS: If you had a final pitch for issue #4, what would it be?
PG: The Powerpuff Girls compete in The Great British Bake Off while also battling a favorite Townsville villain! Sign me up.
All three issues, #4 through #6, of Paulina Ganucheau’s run as writer of The Powerpuff Girls are on sale now from Dynamite Comics.
