I am fairly certain that James Franco is a warlock.

That’s the only way I can reconcile all of the roles that he plays: actor, director, producer, writer, teacher, student. He has to be a warlock who runs on no sleep. Otherwise, I have to question what I’m doing with my life.

That charming bastard has conspired to make me feel like a lazy asshole yet again with his new documentary Kink. The film, directed by Christian Voros and which initially debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, hit theaters Friday in limited release, focusing on Kink.com, the Internet’s largest purveyor BDSM content. Franco’s aim is to use the documentary as a channel to examine the ins and outs, so to speak, of the BDSM fetish and its community, while at the same time serve as a means of educating the public to remove the veil of shame and stigma that sometimes accompanies discussion of BDSM.

The NSFW trailer to the film showcases what one would expect from a discussion of the BDSM community—leather, chains, whips, and all that jazz—but also touches on the people behind the fetish. If what we see here is any indication, I think it was a smart move on Franco’s part to show the people featured in the doc as real people and not folks to be gawked at. Sure, many viewers might watch the film for the novelty and the conceit of the topic, but I feel that Franco is a smart and savvy enough of an auteur to recognize that’s how you hook audiences in order to engage in a real conversation about a seemingly taboo topic.

Franco adds Kink to a growing list of films headed for release in the coming months: Child of God, based on Cormac McCarthy’s book of the same name and directed by Franco, will be available digitally, on Blu-ray, and on DVD October 28 in the states.

Meanwhile, the comedy The Interview, in which Franco costars with The Pineapple Express and This Is the End collaborator Seth Rogen, has bumped from an October release to Christmas. The move comes after Sony, who is producing the film, buckled under threats by Kim Jong Un and will be editing the film. The movie depicts Hollywood reporters Franco and Rogen being recruited by the CIA to assassinate the North Korean leader.

Kink is currently available in select cities nationwide.
